My practice for me means to make art for others, and myself, to see their lives and experiences in a clearer and more compassionate way by confronting ideas and recognizing what’s been imposed by the outside, which often feels so threatening. I paint words and phrases that surface from fleeting, often inarticulate feelings. My compositions are intuitive and direct, using color and playful aesthetics to contrast with weighty messages. I lean into playful aesthetics because they evoke the unfiltered, childhood, and humor. My work draws from public signage and handwritten signs as democratic forms of mass communication. They can be confusing, oddly specific, sometimes beautiful, and often carry an urgency that feels of the spirit of the universe. So much of the manufactured human experience is about self-denial and rejection. What do we do that isn’t about making ourselves more palatable to other people or society? I explore themes that shape my life and those of people I care about: addiction, spiritual awakening, acceptance, love, failure, and relating to others and ourselves. My work draws from psychology and neurology, always with compassion at its core, while also using pop culture as a shared language, all grounded in a class-conscious point of view that values authenticity and the ordinary. I’m interested in the shape of our perception, how brains work, and how our emotions play out.
